Keflavik International Airport has had a busy summer this year. The month of July was a record month with 332.501 passengers going through the airport which surpasses the record month of July 2007 that had 309.004. The number of departing passengers was 5.3 per cent higher in July 2007 and arriving passengers about the same, but the number of transit passengers is considerably higher this year than in 2007, 63.2 per cent up from 48.021 in July 2007 to 78.362 this year.
The total number of passengers at Keflavik during the first seven months of this year is up by 22 per cent, from 991.224 in 2010 to 1.209.021 in 2011. The number of departing passengers is up by 18.6, per cent, arriving passengers by 18 per cent and transit passengers by 40 per cent..
Mr. Hlynur Sigurðsson, Director of the Leif Eiriksson Air Terminal at Keflavik International, says that the increased traffic this summer exceeded expectations at the beginning of the year. “The entire Airport staff has performed brilliantly while handling up to 20 passenger flights simultaneously during the daily morning and afternoon rush. August looks promising and we are optimistic about the fall and winter traffic as well.”
